ASO for indie iOS developers

App Store Optimization built around how indie iOS developers actually work — a low-effort, no-budget cadence to grow organic installs without an enterprise ASO contract.

Most App Store Optimization advice is written for teams with a dedicated growth hire and a four-figure monthly tools bill. If you're a solo developer or a two-person studio, you need the opposite: the 20% of ASO that drives 80% of the installs, on a schedule that survives a day job.

What ASO actually is

ASO is the practice of getting more organic installs from the App Store — both by ranking for more searches (keywords) and by converting more of the people who land on your page (icon, screenshots, ratings). For indies, the keyword half is where the cheapest wins live, because it costs nothing but a metadata update.

The indie ASO loop

You don't need a daily ritual. You need a repeatable loop you run every couple of weeks:

  1. 1Research: find a handful of keywords with real demand and low difficulty. Start with App Store keyword research.
  2. 2Place: update your app name, subtitle and keyword field with the winners.
  3. 3Track: record your rank for each target term so you can see the effect. See tracking keyword rankings.
  4. 4Spy: check what new keywords your competitors picked up, and steal the good ones.
Change one variable at a time. If you rewrite your title and screenshots in the same release, you won't know which one moved the needle.

Where indies actually win

  • Long-tail keywords: specific phrases big apps ignore but motivated users search.
  • Niche storefronts: you can rank far easier in smaller countries, then expand. Sweep many regions at once to find the easy ones.
  • Speed: you can ship a metadata change today. A large team needs three meetings.
  • Honest positioning: a subtitle that says exactly what the app does beats clever copy that ranks for nothing.

What to ignore (for now)

Backlinks, press, and paid UA are real levers, but they're not where a no-budget indie should start. Squeeze organic search first — it compounds and it's free. Once your metadata is dialed in and you're tracking ranks, then consider paid experiments.

Tooling that fits an indie budget

You don't need a Sensor Tower contract to run this loop. AppCompete was built specifically for indie iOS devs: keyword popularity and difficulty, the opportunity finder, daily rank tracking and competitor surveillance, in your browser, free to start and $3/week for unlimited.
